Podcast Episode Sheds Light on How Pricing Enhances Profits
Austin, Texas—Scott Sinning, a pricing expert with over 30 years of experience at Graybar and as president of Pricing for Distributors, recently discusses his profitability insights on the Driven by DCKAP podcast. Hosted by Karthik Chidambaram, the Driven by DCKAP podcast features B2B leaders sharing their stories of innovation and grit.
According to Sinning, the three ways to increase profits are to increase prices, sell more, or reduce expenses and lower cost of goods sold. “Pricing is the biggest lever for profitability,” he said. “A one percent increase in price will drop more to the bottom line than a one percent increase in unit volume or a one percent decrease in costs.”
Building a Strategic Approach to Pricing
Sinning advocates for a comprehensive pricing strategy that integrates sales, marketing, finance, operations, customer service, and even human resources and IT. He emphasizes the necessity for every distributor, regardless of size, to have at least one person dedicated to pricing, even if only part-time, who “eats, sleeps, drinks, and breathes pricing.”
To underscore the strategic importance of pricing as a strategic function, Sinning recommends that distribution pricing leaders report directly to and regularly meet with the CEO. This structure reinforces the role of pricing as significantly influencing profitability, rather relegating it as a “back office” function.
